Summer Work

Español IVH

If you’re planning on taking Spanish IV H, it will be essential that you review and do several activities over the summer so that you will retain a sufficient amount of knowledge and have that knowledge ready and useable at the beginning of the next school year. The main goal to keep in mind is to constantly review and put into use the Spanish that you have learned this year, while adding and building upon that knowledge by exposing yourself to new experiences and peoples dealing with Spanish grammar and culture.

Please complete these activities by the beginning of school next August (These will be taken up for a major grade!) You need to complete an equal amount of time in the 4 basic areas of language learning-SPEAKING, LISTENING, READING, WRITING. Uprising IVH students should complete a minimum of 4 hours total for all skills-1 hour per skill. Here are guidelines you should follow:

SPEAKING

All speaking should be recorded on a tape cassette. You may record journaling, interviews with native speakers, picture sequences (supply copies of pictures), questions and answers (directed responses), or any other type of oral dialogue.

LISTENING

All listening activities should be logged according to time, date, and name of t.v. show, radio program, or movie and a short summary in English of what happened. You may watch the Spanish channel on t.v. or any Spanish video with which you are not already familiar. (Primer Impacto is a good news program on the Spanish channel.)

READING

You may read articles from Spanish magazines, articles from the internet, or books written in Spanish. (La ciudad de las bestias by Isabel Allende is a good one for teenagers.) You should include copies of the articles or title and author of books along with a short summary in English of what you read.

WRITING

Uprising IVH students should write two 200-word essays in Spanish. You may write about the following topics: (1) Una persona que admiras (2) La importancia de la familia (3) La importancia de la reputación en tus experiencias (4) La discriminación-sus causas, efectos, y posibles soluciones (5) Tu comunidad-los aspectos que cambiarías (6) Una experiencia inolvidable OR you may choose to write about a famous Hispanic author (por ejemplo, Cervantes), painter (Picasso, Orozco, Frida Kahlo, etc.), actor/actress, or some other prominent figure in Hispanic culture.
