Summer Work

Espaņol AP

If you’re planning on taking Spanish AP, it will be essential that you review and do several activities over the summer so that you will retain a sufficient amount of knowledge and have that knowledge ready and useable at the beginning of the next school year. The main goal to keep in mind is to constantly review and put into use the Spanish that you have learned this year, while adding and building upon that knowledge by exposing yourself to new experiences and peoples dealing with Spanish grammar and culture.

Please complete these activities by the beginning of school next August (These will be taken up for a major grade!) You need to practice the 4 basic areas of language learning-SPEAKING, LISTENING, READING, WRITING. Here are guidelines you should follow:

SPEAKING

One hour of speaking should be recorded on a tape cassette. You may record journaling, picture sequences (supply copies of pictures), questions and answers (directed responses), or any other type of oral dialogue. The rest of speaking practice should be logged on a piece of paper. It should include 5 different occurences of speaking Spanish with a native speaker. (Mexican restaurants, students here at school, etc...)

LISTENING

All listening activities should be logged according to time, date, and name of t.v. show, radio program, or movie and a short summary in English of what happened. You may watch the Spanish channel on t.v. or any Spanish video with which you are not already familiar. (Primer Impacto is a good news program on the Spanish channel.) Total time spent should equal 2 hours.

READING AND WRITING

To practice reading and writing, students should get a head start on a short research paper written in Spanish. The paper will be checked for completeness at the beginning of school, but will not be checked for grammar and content until the second 9 weeks. You should choose an important Hispanic person who has a great impact in any area of life (literature, art, music, sports, etc.). The paper should be 5-7 pages typed, double spaced, font size 12 in Times New Roman or a similar size font. The paper should address autobiographical information and areas of life in which he or she has achieved. You do not need to footnote or provide quotes. You will need to provide a list of 3-5 different sources at the end of the paper. (You may use the internet for sources.) It is extremely important to have all the research done during the summer and your rough draft ready by the beginning of the school year...Then you will have a full 9 weeks (at least) to make grammar revisions and add any details you would like. There is no required time specified...Just spend enough time to do a good job!
